MONOGENIC DIABETES REGISTRY
(NEONATAL DIABETES AND MATURITY ONSET DIABETES OF YOUNG REGISTRY INDIA)

Diabetes has several types.  Type 1 or insulin dependent diabetes and type 2 or non insulin dependent diabetes are the commonest forms of diabetes.  However, there are other forms of diabetes which, although less common are of great interest and these are due to rare genetic abnormalities in single genes, a condition known as monogenic diabetes. Monogenic diabetes presents characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 and often misdiagnosed as one of the more common types. Accurate diagnosis is very important for delivering best possible treatment, an accurate diagnosis is critical and genetic testing is often recommended in such cases.  
There are two main types of monogenic diabetes:

1. Neonatal diabetes (NDM), which refers to a form of diabetes with onset below 6 months of age.
2. Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY), which refers to a form of diabetes often developing before the age of 25, running in the families through generations and treatable by diet or tablets, not always needing insulin.

We at Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre have launched the monogenic diabetes registry, the first nationwide database of individuals affected by the rare forms of diabetes. The purpose of the registry is to track and study the monogenic forms of diabetes on a long term basis, to understand the genetic patterns in the families and to deliver optimal therapies for each patient according to their genetic etiologies. As a part of this, we perform genetic testing for patients affected with neonatal diabetes or MODY subtypes of diabetes and for their families.
We invite doctors treating patients with Neonatal Diabetes and MODY to register their cases in this registry.  We also invite patients or their parents or close relatives who might have one of these conditions to register at this site.  All information provided will be kept confidential.  If we can provide any professional help we would be happy to do so.
